چکیده

The onramp metering control problem is posed using a cell transmission-like model called the asymmetric cell transmission model (ACTM). The problem formulation captures both freeflow and congested conditions, and includes upper bounds on the metering rates and on the onramp queue lengths. It is shown that a near-global solution to the resulting nonlinear optimization problem can be found by solving a single linear program, whenever certain conditions are met. The most restrictive of these conditions requires the congestion on the mainline not to back up onto the onramps whenever optimal metering is used. The technique is tested numerically using data from a severely congested stretch of freeway in southern California. Simulation results predict a 17.3% reduction in delay when queue constraints are enforced. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Comparing Methods of Ramp Metering for On-Ramps to Improve the Operational Conditions at Peak Hours

This paper aims to evaluate and compare the effects of different methods of ramp metering on the operational conditions of traffic flow at three levels: the network level (including the freeway and its connected ramps), the entrance ramp, and the upstream segment of the entrance. To achieve this aim, one of the most important urban freeways in the metropolis of Isfahan was selected. The traffic...

Creating complex congestion patterns via multi-objective optimal freeway traffic control with application to cyber-security

This article presents a study on freeway networks instrumented with coordinated ramp metering and the ability of such control systems to produce arbitrarily complex congestion patterns within the dynamical limits of the traffic system. The developed method is used to evaluate the potential for an adversary with access to control infrastructure to enact high-level attacks on the underlying freew...

Modeling and PARAMICS Based Evaluation of New Local Freeway Ramp-Metering Strategy that Takes Ramp Queues into Account

One of the major criticisms of ramp-metering has been the delay caused on the ramps because of the queues created by ramp control strategies. However, recently, several researchers proposed strategies that explicitly take into account ramp queues when determining metering rates. In this paper, an isolated “feedback” based ramp-metering strategy using modeling is presented. In addition to the re...

Imputation of Ramp Flow Data Using the Asymmetric Cell Transmission Traffic Flow Model

The Asymmetric Cell Transmission model can be used to simulate traffic flows in freeway sections. The model is specified by fundamental diagram parametersdetermined from mainline data, and on-ramp and off-ramp flows. The mainline flow/density data are efficiently archived and readily available, but the ramp flow data are generally found missing. This paper presents an imputation technique based...

Optimization of Coordinated Multi-Ramp Metering Control with Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA)

 Ramp metering has been recognized as one of viable strategies of freeway traffic management, which may improve travel speed as well as reduce delay. In this study, a dynamic model is developed to optimize metering rates of a series of on-ramps which maximize the total throughput subject to vehicle density, roadway capacity, and queue length constraints with simultaneous perturbation stochasti...
